Keeping your boat in good condition means keeping up with its maintenance. Sometimes, you need to make boat repairs at home in order to get your boat ready for the water again. Boat repair is fairly easy if you have the right tools and you know what to do and how to do it. Here are some basic upkeep tasks you’ll want to do on a regular basis so that your boat works as it should and stays out of the repair shop.

Perform an Inspection

It’s helpful to start your maintenance by inspecting your boat inside and out and taking notes on what you may need to repair or replace. Examining your boat before you start can save you time by helping you figure out exactly what tasks you should address.

Check the Engine & Battery

Look over your boat’s engine and battery to make sure they’re functional. Your belts may need replacing if they’re worn down, and your tanks and hoses should also be examined for signs of leakage or wear.

Wash Your Boat

Keeping your boat clean will help you immensely with maintenance. For one thing, a clean boat makes it easier to see if there’s any damage that needs to be dealt with. It’s also just nicer for you and your passengers, and cutting down on grime can help to reduce the damage it can do.

Look Over Safety Equipment

All the safety gear on your boat should be in good condition, too. Examine your life jackets and throwable life ring for signs of wear or damage that may merit replacement. Check your first-aid kit and replenish any supplies that are low, and toss any medications or ointments that may have expired. Test your emergency radio and make sure that you have at least one functional fire extinguisher and some emergency flares.

Replace Fluids

The oil in your boat motor’s engine should be clean and ready to go for your next trip. Make sure you change the oil regularly and that there isn’t water in it. You’ll also want to top off coolant to ensure the engine can stay cool. Finally, make sure that there’s sufficient fuel in the tank for your trip. You don’t want to get caught out in the middle of the lake with an empty gas tank, forcing you to call for help!
